In the first 2.5 years of implementation of all abortion services in Uruguay, Mujer y Salud en Uruguay (MYSU) has identified unprecedented percentages of gynaecologists within the country’s public health system who are conscientious objectors (92% in Salto; 87% in Paysandú; 82% in Soriano and 43% in Río Negro – and up to 100% in Young and Mercedes). The Court’s ruling will only reinforce the barriers women face.Uruguay took over 30 years to democratically resolve the issue of backstreet abortions. Today, medical, political, legislative and judiciary bodies are attempting to turn the clock back by continuing to impose their own beliefs and interests over the rights of women.
