EMW Women’s Surgical Center in Louisville, Kentucky is on the frontlines of the abortion conflict – one of just two clinics in Kentucky that provides abortions. Three-thousand women come here for those services each year, and every one of them must run a gauntlet of protesters.

Dr Ernest Marshall co-founded the clinic in 1980. He said there’s a simple reason he provides abortions: “You can never be equal if you can’t control your reproduction.”

Biden administration lifts abortion referral ban on family planning clinics

On 4 October 2021, the Biden administration reversed a ban on abortion referrals by US family planning clinics, lifting a Trump-era restriction as political and legal battles over abortion continue. The Department of Health and Human Services said the new regulation will restore the federal family planning programme to the way it ran under the Obama administration, when FP clinics were able to refer women seeking an abortion to an abortion provider.
