On 12 November 2025, a timely discussion took place with award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Irin Carmon on her new book, “Unbearable: Five Women and the Perils of Pregnancy in America.”
The book profiles five women’s stories of infertility, miscarriage, abortion, maternal morbidity and mortality, and criminalization. One of those women was brave client, Hali Burns, who was jailed days after giving birth, where she remained for months until they were able to get her out of jail. Emma Roth, former Pregnancy Justice senior staff attorney and Hali’s attorney, will be in conversation with Irin.
And check out Irin Carmon’s Los Angeles Times commentary on Trump telling pregnant women to “tough it out”, highlighting Hali Burns’ story and what’s at stake for pregnant people today. Burns’ story demonstrates what happens when we treat pregnancy, not as a human experience deserving of support, but as a ‘crime scene’, when we view them not as people but as vessels that must be monitored, controlled and punished.
‘Mife No Matter What’: Community Abortion Providers Pledge to Continue Sharing Free Abortion Pills, Even If FDA Imposes Restrictions
Since Roe fell, a community-led network of care has grown into a nationwide system with the promise of “mife no matter what”. Despite growing legal threats to the accessibility of abortion pills, national networks of volunteers are working to distribute the medication, discretely and without cost to patients.
In June 2022, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and over half of states banned or restricted abortion, grassroots activists across the country organized mutual aid groups to share free abortion pills with people living in restrictive states. Today, community providers distributing free abortion pills operate in every U.S. state and territory that bans or restricts abortion.
