USA – Anti-abortion and pro-insurrection: how white supremacists, male supremacists, and anti-abortionists converged at the Capitol

19 February 2021 – WATCH THE VIDEO

Dr Carol Mason and Prof Loretta J Ross explain connections between the insurrectionary right and anti-abortion ideology, both of which are fuelled by racism, anti-semitism, and misogyny. National Associates for Pregnant Women (NAPW) Executive Director Lynn M Paltrow moderated and joined the conversation.

NAPW works to ensure that no one is arrested, shamed, or denied their rights because they have the capacity for pregnancy, are pregnant, or because of an outcome of their pregnancies – including births, miscarriages, stillbirths, and abortions.

Loretta Ross is a Visiting Associate Professor at Smith College, Program for the Study of Women and Gender. She started her career in social change activism at such organizations as the National Black Women’s Health Project, Center for Democratic Renewal (National Anti-Klan Network), National Center for Human Rights Education, and SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.

Carol Mason has authored three books on the rise of the anti-abortion movement. She published an article on this subject this month: “How Trumpism fostered anti-choice violence.” Ms. Magazine, 9 February 2021. She writes that the “pro-life” presence in Washington DC on 6 January has been, with few exceptions, largely under-reported. Abortion opponents were not only part of the destructive melee at the Capitol – they also have modeled radicalisation techniques used in building insurrectionary fever by successfully deploying incendiary lies and conspiracy theories. Two weeks ago in Tennessee, a gunman shot out the door of a Planned Parenthood clinic; it is all linked…
