Double, double, toil and trouble – a gathering of activists in Amsterdam
Earlier this month, SAFE brought together an incredible group of activists in Amsterdam. This gathering was part of an artivism project we’ve been developing with experimental publishing house Uitgeverij Spookstad and our amazing friend, midwife, philosopher and abortion activist, Rodante van der Waal.
The project centers on building a counter-map of abortion access in Europe — a flowchart showing the real steps someone must take to access an abortion in each country, including all the obstacles often faced along the way.
Over two days, we connected with representatives from Kosovo, Romania, Moldova, Italy, Hungary, Ireland, England, Poland, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and more. We tested the map prototype and shared our experiences, challenges, and strategies as abortion activists. We worked hard (toiled!) but left with renewed enrgy and bushels of joy. Discussion topics included:
- Supporting self-managed abortions with pills
- Pathways for second and third trimester abortions
- Barriers to abortion access in each country
- Challenges facing frontline abortion activists
