On 27 September 2026, voters in the canton of Geneva approved a Social Democratic Party initiative for free contraception, with a 58.46% majority of the vote. The canton will cover the cost of all recognised methods, regardless of income or age. These include the pill, IUDs, implants, emergency contraception and condoms. Left-wing parties and the Centre backed the initiative, but the Young Liberal Radicals opposed it. The cost is estimated at over CHF 20 million a year.
