SPAIN – Spain’s Supreme Court rules that sexual and reproductive health information posted on the internet, including about abortion, is protected by the right to information

In early 2020, Spain blocked Women on Web’s website, which provides information on sexual health and reproductive rights and access to safe abortion via online services. This left many people unable to access them.Women’s Link filed a lawsuit citing the right to information on the internet about sexual and reproductive rights. Recently, the Spanish Supreme Court ordered that the website should be partially unblocked. This important decision considers that sexual and reproductive health information posted on the internet, including about abortion, is protected by the right to information and cannot be blocked without judicial authorisation. Providing and protecting accurate information about abortion on the internet is crucial as it is used increasingly to access this information.Wins like this case give us hope as we continue to work to expand access to safe abortion by protecting the intersection between digital rights, the right to information, and sexual and reproductive rights.FULL TEXT: by Aintzane Márquez Tejón, Abogada Senior/Senior Attorney,  PRESS RELEASE, 20 October 2022
