Marion Stevens, director of the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition reports from a recent radio interviewand a Times Live article that clinics for both contraception and abortion remain open in South Africa with the support of Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, Commission for Gender Equality, who has said they are essential heath services.
On 10 March 2020, the SRJC organised an event for Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, where they honoured Dr Marijke Alblas, who at 76 is still training and providing services. She moved from the Netherlands to South Africa in the 1990s. Excited by the 1996 Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act, she has worked tirelessly throughout South Africa as a sexual and reproductive health consultant, training providers with different stakeholders: medical schools, NGOs and government. She is known to take an early morning flight to provide abortion care for almost 20 women in a day and then return home that night. Her hand luggage often carries her surgical instruments for backup in case it is needed. Over the years she has been part of the SRJC referral network too and given much to South African women around the country.
