POLAND – A Christmas present: 100,000 signatures on the decriminalisation of abortion bill

The Federation for Women & Family Planning reached the 100,000 signatures needed on their decriminalisation of abortion bill on 20 December 2021, and will now be able to submit it to the Sejm (parliament). BUT they have decided to wait for even more signatures until the 14 February to give everyone another gift for International Women’s Day on 8 March, and will submit the bill to the Sejm then.

And an unexpected donation to Abortion without Borders

In mid-December 2021, Polish academic Michal Sierminski was awarded a cash prize by Mateusz Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of Poland since 2017. Instead of denouncing the award due to political differences, Dr Siermiński published an open letter in the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, saying that he was donating the money to Abortion Without Borders (Aborcja Bez Granic).

Abortion Without Borders said: “We are touched and inspired by this donation and show of solidarity, and, to celebrate it, we invite anyone who wishes to also make a donation to AWB. We will send a thank you email to the Polish Prime Minister thanking him for all donations made to us between now and Christmas. We know it’s childish, but we also did this several times in Ireland and Northern Ireland in the past, and people quite like it.”
