NEPAL – UNFPA is helping women and girls stay afloat, and you can help

We’ve read the news, we’ve seen the headlines, but we cannot imagine the daily struggles of more than 4000 pregnant women living in the flood affected areas of Nepal right now.

Severe flash floods in Nepal on 26 August affected multiple regions, causing loss of life and damage to critical infrastructure, including health clinics. More than 626 people have died, and 2400 are still missing. Among them are mothers and children.

Today in Nepal, a pregnant mother’s journey to childbirth begins on a road that no longer exists. If she survives the trek through the wreckage, she arrives at a local clinic standing in ruins. And if she manages to step inside, she is met with darkness. No electricity, no facilities.

[Editor’s Note: I have shared this call for individual giving with concern. Urgent requests to give money seem to appear at the end of every news report and every other article as well in every NGO and women’s publication that I see or receive, and now also from UNFPA, who are reduced to asking individuals to help them to fund the saving of pregnant women’s lives. Something that is not their “fault” – the withdrawal of huge amounts of many governments’ funding of charitable giving, especially to support women and children, including pregnant women with both wanted and unwanted pregnancies, is very wrong here. It is past due time we call it out!]
