MEXICO – Quintana Roo state decriminalises abortion up to 12 weeks

….belong to us!Quintana Roo has voted to decriminalise abortion, becoming the latest state in Mexico to ease restrictions on the procedure as part of the “green wave” demanding greater reproductive rights across Latin America. Abortion became legal in Mexico City 15 years ago. In 2021, the country’s Supreme Court unanimously ruled that penalising abortion was unconstitutional.Nineteen lawmakers on 26 October voted in favour with three against, approving a change in the law that would decriminalise abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy and remove a requirement for rape victims to report their abuser to access abortion. Deputy Hugo Alday said after the vote that Quintana Roo had a duty to reform its laws in accordance with social dynamics and the federal pact.Fewer than a dozen of Mexico’s 32 states have changed their laws, but that is a not inconsiderable number, considering everything, and campaigning continues across the country.SOURCE: AlJazeera and News Agencies, 26 October 2022  Visual from Video: Abortion Rights Marches in Latin America , 28 September 2022.
