MALTA – A plea for abortion to become a fundamental right in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights

Maltese Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer has called for the introduction of abortion into the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in Brussels, following from the French constitutional enshrinement of the right. He described himself as the first Maltese in Brussels to have spoken in favour of women’s full bodily autonomy.

He said: “The right to bodily autonomy is a fundamental right. This morning in the @europeanparliament, I was the first Maltese Member to speak in favour of choice rights when it comes to abortion. I have voted many times, but this was the first time, I was given the opportunity to actually speak in a debate on making abortion a fundamental right in the charter of fundamental rights.”

He quoted various experiences of anonymous women who had had to have illegal abortions in Malta due to domestic violence, rape, or illness.
