INDIA – International Safe Abortion Day Reports

Pratigya Campaign published a newsletter full of reports about their own activities for 28 September and those of their partners. Full reports, visuals and videos can be found in the newsletter.

Pratigya Campaign: Media Sensitisation“Using social media as a tool to garner engagement and get conversations started, we designed our campaign for International Day of Safe Abortion – #PROtectChoice. We wanted the content to be educational yet catchy so that it could resonate with the youth of today. This translated into two of our content series, Little Miss fights the barriers against abortions and #ChupKar. Both touched upon the various difficulties a pregnant person faces while accessing abortions, such as lack of information and societal prejudice. We spread information about why access to safe abortion is an essential healthcare service. We also marked World Sexual Health Day and World Contraception Day, through our social content. By mixing impactful messaging with eye-catching visuals, we highlighted the importance of sexual well-being and aimed at fostering a change in people’s outlook.“The portrayal of positive sentiments towards abortions and the normalisation of abortion rights in the media is essential to educate the public about the topic. The Pratigya Campaign organised a Media Sensitisation Workshop at the Press Club of India bringing together experts on gender, law, and digital media. This led to an enriching discourse, comprising different perspectives, anecdotes, and questions. The workshop provided an opportunity to further the understanding of sexual and reproductive rights and safe abortion discourse in the Indian media.”+++Family Planning Association of India: Building a Sanctuary for the Right to ChoiceDr Kalpana Apte, Secretary General, FPAI, talks in this video about India’s efforts towards making abortions accessible and inclusive, and urges people to #PROtect Choice.SOURCE: Pratigya Campaign on Instagram+++The YP Foundation: Tweeting A Transformation

Abortion as a topic of discussion is surrounded by stigma and fear, limiting an abortion seeker’s access to safe services. This access is conditional on several privileges granted by identity markers. The YP Foundation initiated a holistic conversation around safe abortions on the occasion of #InternationalSafeAbortionDay. Their Twitter chat answered people’s questions and busted myths to carve out a path to normalise abortions. This led to an enriching discourse, comprising different perspectives, anecdotes, and questions. The workshop provided an opportunity to further the understanding of sexual and reproductive rights and safe abortion discourse in the Indian media. Agents of Ishq, Hidden Pockets, YP Foundation, Love Matters India, Tarshi, Point of View, Safe Abortion Action Fund, and Young Activist Network for Abortion Advocacy/ICWRSA all participated. SOURCE: The YP Foundation on Twitter
