The Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises is gravely concerned by the ongoing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak and its impacts on the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and girls in Central Africa.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) causes acute, often fatal, illness and is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola with a fatality rate in the range of 30-50%. Unlike other species of Ebola, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for Bundibugyo virus.

To protect women and girls, health actors must maintain critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services during the outbreak and ensure necessary SRH considerations are integrated into the outbreak response.
