EUROPEAN UNION – European Parliament majority votes in favour of including access to abortion in the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights

The resolution was approved by 336 votes to 163 against, with support mainly coming from left-wing and centrist members. However, the vote is mainly symbolic as the resolution is not binding. It would require the approval of all 27 member states to be included in the EU’s Fundamental Rights Charter. As abortion is still heavily restricted in a few EU countries it could not be treated as a fundamental right across the EU.
