CANADA – Report to the Universal Periodic Review 4th Cycle: Barriers to abortion in Canada

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a human rights mechanism at the United Nations Human Rights Council. Its goal is to improve human rights conditions in every country through a peer-review process. This year, Canada is being reviewed on its human rights record. Action Canada and our partners have submitted recommendations as part of the UPR process to rectify Canada’s human rights failures on equal abortion access.

Our submission outlines how migration status and homelessness create difficult and sometimes unsurmountable barriers to abortion access in Canada, and gives recommendations on how Canada can do better. The submission was written in collaboration with Justice for Migrant Workers, YWCA Hamilton, the Community Research Platform at McMaster University, the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, and the Sexual Rights Initiative.

Stay tuned for more updates, and follow us on social media to learn more about how we can leverage UN systems to improve abortion access in Canada!
