CANADA – Celebrating Canada’s new universal contraception plan

Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights is a progressive, pro-choice charitable organization committed to advancing and upholding sexual and reproductive health and rights in Canada and globally. Action Canada is building on the 50-year legacy of our predecessor organizations. We are: the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada, Canadians for Choice, the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, and Action Canada for Population and Development.

On International Women’s Day, we [were] proud to celebrate Canada’s new universal contraception plan. For years Action Canada has been pushing to make this a reality. Last month, we joined Minister of Health Mark Holland, key parliamentarians and leading advocates to announce Canada’s new pharmacare plan, which covers contraception and diabetes medication.

This historic victory is the result of countless policy briefs, panels, parliamentary meetings and supporters like you who pushed for progress. It’s thanks to everyone who mobilized, wrote to their MPs, and signed petitions that contraception will now be free.

You (Canadians) made this victory possible!

We have always been guided by the belief that everyone, regardless of where you live, what job you have, or what’s in your bank account, should have the ability to make autonomous decisions about your health and reproduction. When people are empowered to choose if or when to have children, and how many of them, they are better positioned to continue their education and have better employment opportunities, which in turn impacts their income, mental health, family stability and their children’s well-being.

Equitable access to contraceptive medication benefits everyone, not just those who can get pregnant. It benefits families, including children, and communities as a whole. The new pharmacare legislation will change lives for generations to come.

As we mark this feminist victory, we continue to champion the importance of comprehensive sex-ed and robust investments in healthcare including sexual health clinics.

This is proof that change is possible and speaking up makes a difference! Thank you for being a valuable part of our movement.

Action Canada’s Your Sexual Health Hub features information about bodies, safer sex, STIs, contraception, and more! We are excited to announce that we have launched a mobile Your Sexual Health App features the information on the hub and allows for online or offline access when you are not connected to wi-fi or data.
