ACT AUSTRALIA – Australian Capital Territory allows GPs to prescribe medical abortion pills

Women will have more choice for abortion services in the ACT under the Health (Improving Abortion Access) Amendment Bill 2018, which was passed on 19 September in the ACT Legislative Assembly. The legislation, introduced by ACT Greens, allows medical abortion pills to be accessed through a local GP or a telemedicine provider, bringing the nation’s capital in line with other jurisdictions. Women are no longer required to attend an approved facility such as the Canberra Hospital or Marie Stopes clinic, or go into New South Wales to a GP, to obtain the pills, which will make them more accessible. Women can use the pills at home.
