Abortions in Kansas are up by over 200% compared to 2020
At a meeting at the beginning of August 2025, abortion rights supporters reflected on where access to abortion stands three years after voters rejected the so-called “Value Them Both” amendment.
Things have changed in the three years since Kansans voted to preserve the right to abortion in their state Constitution, say local abortion rights advocates. The changes can be measured by the number of abortions Kansas abortion providers provided. According to statistics presented at the Planned Parenthood Great Plains panel, about 7,500 abortions were done in the state in 2020. Last year, that number was 22,000, an increase of over 200%, with many women driving hours to get to Kansas from states where abortion is banned.

Abortion bans linked to sharp rise in sepsis, infant death, and maternal mortality, new research shows
In the wake of the overturn of Roe v. Wade, US states with abortion bans have seen over 22,000 additional births, 478 additional infant deaths, and 59 additional maternal deaths. These were among the findings shared at a June 9 symposium on the health impact of abortion bans, co-sponsored by the Hopkins Population Center, State Innovation Exchange, Population Reference Bureau, and the William H Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health.
Researchers, medical providers, legislators, and journalists came together in Washington, D.C., to talk about new research, share experiences on the ground, and discuss how data can inform more effective public health policy. The event highlighted a growing body of evidence on health outcomes in states with abortion bans, revealing alarming increases in preventable deaths and pregnancy complications after the 2022 decision, which ended the Constitutional right to have an abortion.
