Sardinia is preparing to introduce a structural change in the management of medical abortion (IVG), extending the practice beyond the hospital setting. The Regional Council has approved a measure that allows abortions to be performed in family planning centers and authorized clinics connected to hospitals, at no cost to patients. At the same time, a trial phase will begin, allowing for the home administration of abortive medications. This is a first for Central and Southern Italy and one of the first experiences of its kind in Italy, where only Emilia-Romagna has so far undertaken this approach. The …Regional Health Councillor, Armando Bartolazzi, received the government’s approval and tasked the Health Directorate with establishing a technical committee to draft regional guidelines for implementing the new model…. Their task will be to monitor the entire process…. A dedicated training program for healthcare workers is also planned….
Currently, the region is significantly behind national standards. According to 2022 data from the abortion surveillance system, the use of curettage in Sardinia is higher than the Italian average (21 percent versus 7.2 percent). 11.9 percent of surgical abortions within 90 days are performed in an inpatient setting (national average: 5 percent). Medical abortions in hospitals remain at 38.1 percent, compared to 51.3 percent nationally….
The goal of the new regional policy is to increase the quality and safety of procedures, reduce the use of invasive methods, and improve accessibility throughout the region, while simultaneously easing the pressure on hospital facilities. Experimental projects will therefore be launched in outpatient and family planning settings, with the option of home administration of medications, through operational protocols between selected family planning centers and the relevant hospitals.
