AUSTRALIA – Investigation of abortion advocacy models: New head of Family Planning Alliance Australia would like to interview ICWRSA members in seven countries

Hello, my name is Daile Kelleher from Australia. I have been awarded a travel fellowship to investigate abortion advocacy internationally. I have recently been appointed as the CEO of Family Planning Alliance Australia. I have worked in abortion advocacy since 2017 and been instrumental in advancing legislation and policy reforms in Australia.

I will be visiting Mexico City/Mexico; New York, Washington DC and Austin/USA, Vancouver/Canada, Brussels/Belgium, Amsterdam/Netherlands, Paris/France and Wellington/New Zealand.

I’d be interested in organising a meeting in each city with any relevant people across these countries in August and September 2024 and how we might connect. See calendar with dates below.

I would like to learn about advocacy models that have been developed and what has been successful or unsuccessful in promoting changes to legislation or access to abortion. As we know, legislation impacts access but legislation doesn’t equal access. In Australia we have fairly good legislation, but access is varied. In the context of different countries and their health systems, I’m interested in learning and seeing if anything can be translated to an Australian context.

I will be producing a report after the fellowship and presenting my findings at conferences and hopefully to various health officials across the country.

I am open to any meetings and discussions that might be useful on these dates in these cities this year:

– Vancouver, Canada: 6-8 August

– Mexico City, Mexico: 12-15 August

– Austin, TX, USA: 19-20 August

– Washington DC, USA: 26-30 August

– New York, NY, USA: 2-6 September

– Paris, France: 9-13 September

– Amsterdam, Netherlands: 16-17 September

– Brussels, Belgium: 18-22 September

– Wellington, New Zealand: 26-27 September
