TUNISIA – Groupe Tawhida Ben Cheikh media campaign for International Safe Abortion Day

Groupe Tawhida Ben Cheikh, Research and Action for Women’s Health (GTBC), launched a media campaign on Facebook and Instagram in celebration of 28 September. The goal was to reach a wide audience by simplifying language and making information accessible to all segments of society. The campaign began with a detailed schedule, featuring a series of videos and infographics focused on both raising awareness and providing information about the current situation of contraception and abortion in Tunisia.

The slogan “Prevent or choose, it’s always my decision” was chosen for the campaign. Preparations included the release of a teaser that revisited the September 2023 event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in Tunisia.

To combat false information and stereotypes surrounding sexual and reproductive health, a “Myth vs. Reality” section was created. GTBC also shared infographics explaining contraception, including where to find available methods and its history in Tunisia. Every two hours, statistics from a quantitative survey on “the re-composition of values in relation to sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and gender relations” among 5,837 young people conducted in 2022-2023 in Tunisia, were posted on Facebook through stories and posts. These data, covering contraception and abortion, were complemented by international statistics on contraceptive use.

On September 26th, an animated video explaining the different contraceptive methods was posted. Starting on the 27th, similar content on abortion was shared. The campaign emphasized that abortion is a right, featuring videos, testimonies, and infographics highlighting the importance of safe access to abortion services. Recommendations aimed at improving these services will be published in the first week of October.
