On 28 September 2023, the Groupe Tawhida Ben Cheikh organised a press conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion in Tunisia

A l’occasion du 28 Septembre 2023 le groupe Tawhida Ben Cheikh a organisé une conférence de presse pour marquer le 50ème anniversaire de la légalisation de l’avortement en Tunisie. Durant cette conférence de presse à laquelle ont participé plus de 30 participants des journalistes, des Organisations de la Société Civile, des ambassades et des fondations, des militants des droits humains, des experts. Le groupe Tawhida a mis l’accent sur l’urgence impératif de sensibiliser l’opinion publique à la situation actuelle des droits à l’avortement, en mettant en lumière les défis auxquels les femmes font face. Pour cela, une vigilance accrue est nécessaire. En outre, il est crucial d’unir les forces de divers acteurs tels que les organisations de la société civile, les défenseurs des droits des femmes, les médias et les institutions, afin de collaborer efficacement pour faire progresser ces droits fondamentaux.
Les participants à la conférence de presse ont conclu en mettant l’accent sur l’importance cruciale de persévérer dans la lutte pour les droits en matière de santé reproductive et sexuelle, en particulier le droit à l’avortement. Elles ont formulé plusieurs recommandations pour faire avancer cette cause. Il a été souligné l’urgence pour l’État de collecter et de partager des données actualisées sur la demande et l’offre des services d’avortement, ainsi que de prioriser la contraception et l’avortement dans les politiques de santé. La société civile et les organisations travaillant pour les droits des femmes et la santé reproductive doivent continuer à œuvrer pour sensibiliser et conscientiser la population à ces questions vitales. Les médias jouent un rôle crucial dans cette mission. Une des recommandations est d’organiser une plateforme de formations concrètes sur la question de l’accès à l’avortement et à la santé sexuelle et reproductive.

The press conference was attended by over 30 participants, including journalists, civil society organisations, embassies and foundations, human rights activists and experts. Groupe Tawhida stressed the urgent need to raise public awareness of the current state of abortion rights, highlighting the challenges facing women. To achieve this, increased vigilance is required. In addition, it is crucial to join forces with various actors such as civil society organisations, women’s rights advocates, the media and institutions, in order to collaborate effectively to advance these fundamental rights.
Participants at the press conference concluded by emphasizing the crucial importance of persevering in the fight for reproductive and sexual health rights, in particular the right to abortion. They made a number of recommendations for advancing this cause.
