FRANCE – Current study of access to abortion in France concludes: 50 years after the Veil Law, abortion is still only a fragile right

Press release: Paris, 26 September 2024

We carried out a study with the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) and revealed the results of this first measurement of access to abortion in France. Despite the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution, this unprecedented investigation has revealed persistent obstacles and strongly anchored taboos. It is time to act to guarantee real, equal and unimpeded access to this fundamental right.

85% of people questioned by the IFOP say they are very strongly attached to the right to abortion. Despite this support, 89% of people report persistent obstacles:

a lack of structures and excessively long waiting times: more than half of women had to wait more than 7 days to have an appointment, instead of the maximum 5 days recommended by WHO;

a strong presence of stigmatization of abortion that fuels the taboo on abortion: 1 in 3 women felt pressure while having an abortion (from anti-choice movements and/or health professionals, and/or their own companions).

It is essential that political leaders take action to implement an ambitious plan to improve access to abortion. Le Planning Familial identifies several priorities to reduce the stigmatization of those who have abortions and allow those who wish to have an abortion to speak out:

– better training for professionals

– launch a communications campaign to address the general public

– implement sexuality education sessions

– develop new abortion centres, particularly in rural areas and medical deserts.

As conservative movements gain ground, which the recent European elections have shown, it is all the more crucial to defend this fundamental right.

On the occasion of International Safe Abortion Day, a day about the right to have an abortion, Le Planning Familial is calling for a massive mobilization on 28 September. Together, let’s make our voices heard for free, equal and taboo-free access to abortion, in France and around the world.
