Here are some suggestions of activities for campaigning on 28 September and all year round:
- Form a national coalition or join one
- Participate in your regional network or help to start one
- Start a public campaign to free any women and safe abortion providers from prison
- Launch a long-term campaign for the decriminalisation of abortion
- Start a safe abortion information hotline
- Hold a public meeting or a meeting for abortion rights advocates and supporters – e.g. with women who have had abortions, with legal experts, with pro choice health professionals and students, pro choice politicians
- Hold a public tribunal to publicise the negative consequences of the criminalisation of abortion in your country
- Form an expert committee to draft an abortion law reform bill and launch a campaign to promote it
- Create and circulate a petition
- Launch a campaign for safe abortion services
- Encourage government approval of mifepristone and misoprostol as essential medicines (which are on the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines list)
- Do research on women’s experiences of safe or unsafe abortion and post-abortion care, and/or the type, cost, quality and safety of abortion services in your country
- Do research on obstacles to safe abortion
- Carry out a survey of public opinion
- Make a video
- Organise a festival for choice
- Organise a demonstration, rally or flash mob
- Organise a tweetathon or other social media campaign
- Create informational materials for women describing safe abortion methods and giving information on where to find a safe abortion, and what to do if abortion is legally restricted in your country.
