FRANCE – Early abortion via telemedicine permitted as of 10 April 2020

In a letter published 10 April 2020, in response to a request from the Minister of Solidarity and Health, the High Authority on Health and National College of Gynaecologists & Obstetricians provided the following guidance and recommendations for abortion with pills by telemedicine outside health establishments in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In all cases where possible, women should be able to choose the method of abortion, medical or surgical, and receive detailed information. Self-managed medical abortion following teleconsultation is now permitted at home up to 63 days of amenorrhoea during the health emergency period linked to the Covid-19 epidemic only. Women can now get the pills from a pharmacy, whereas in the past they had to collect them from a doctor or midwife.

“It is imperative in the current pandemic situation to guarantee a rapid response to requests for abortion so as not to exceed the legal deadlines, while limiting the exposure of patients and professionals to Covid-19, and conserve the resources of health establishments.”
