It has been reported that two close associates of Pope Francis have accused US Catholic ultraconservatives of making an alliance of “hate” with evangelical Christians to back President Trump. The article, in La Civiltà Cattolica, by two close associates of the Pope, warns that conservative American Catholics have strayed into the deepening political polarization in the United States. The writers even declare that the world view of American evangelical and hard-line Catholics is “not too far apart’’ from jihadists. They also point to the risk of corrupting the Catholic faith with an ideology intended to inject “religious influence in the political sphere” and replace secularism with a “theocratic type of state”.
