Yesterday, alongside the midterm elections, US voters decided on 145 ballot measures. Abortion was on the ballot in four states:
- Missouri: Amendment 3 would repeal the abortion rights amendment approved by nearly 52% of voters in 2024. It would ban abortion except in medical emergencies and, up to 12 weeks, in cases of rape or incest. It would also write the existing ban on gender-affirming care for minors into the state constitution. The Republican-led legislature placed the measure on the ballot in May 2025. In an August poll by St Louis University and YouGov, 44% of respondents opposed it, 43% supported it and 13% were undecided.
- Idaho and Nevada: Measures would block abortion bans before fetal viability. Nevada voters first approved their measure in 2024, and it needs a second approval to take effect.
- Virginia: A constitutional amendment would ensure abortion is allowed in the first two trimesters.
Voters also decided on measures restricting trans athletes’ participation in school sports and on banning some gender-affirming treatments for minors.
