In a survey by the Mulier Institute published on 27 October, 66% of respondents said they had no objection to a fellow sports club member being gay, down from 85% in 2008. 55% said they would have no problem sharing a shower with a gay teammate of the same sex, down from 73%. The institute said the findings reflect a wider social trend also seen in schools. Among boys aged 12 to 16, the share with a positive view of homosexuality has fallen from 40% to 22% since 2021.
The Dutch Olympic Committee NOC*NSF called the findings “highly regrettable” and pledged to step up its efforts to make sport more inclusive. The John Blankenstein Foundation, which campaigns for LGBTI+ emancipation in sport, said it had seen declining interest in its workshops and a growing number of parents voicing objections.
