On 30 September, Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas asked the US Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional the abortion “shield laws” of New York, Massachusetts and California. These laws protect clinicians who prescribe and mail abortion pills to patients in states with bans. The three states also filed a federal suit against 30 defendants, including telehealth providers, to stop them from mailing abortion medication into their states. Separately, on 3 November Missouri voters will decide on Amendment 3. It would repeal the abortion-rights amendment approved in 2024, ban abortion with limited exceptions and prohibit gender-transition care for people under 18. According to Ballotpedia, it is the first time voters in any US state will decide whether to overturn an existing constitutional right to abortion.
