Umm, who waits for emails anyway?
We’re seeing some interesting data at WFD in 2025. On safe2choose, people looking for abortion information are increasingly choosing live chat over email discussions. This wasn’t the case a couple of years ago, when email was king. The data show that in 2025, people using safe2choose’s email counseling dropped by 22%, while live chat grew by 77%. In Latin America, the shift was even sharper – email down 50%, chat up over 100%. And it’s not because we were pushing people toward chat. Our marketing pointed users to a general page where they could choose either option. They just kept choosing chat.
This feels part of a wider trend. People are becoming used to instantaneous, personalised responses from LLMs; they’re not going to wait two days for an email response. That’s how people interact with information now, and it would be strange to expect reproductive health support to be any different.
So what are we doing?
We’re adapting to be more immediately available. As you know, we are building our own abortion-friendly AI models (Ally) to match the response speed of LLMs while using consistently pro-choice language, improving user security, and incorporating hand-picked medical and provider data to reduce misinformation. But we’re also strengthening our human support. Over the coming months, we’re increasing staffing and availability for our multilingual human counselling team so that when people want to chat with a human, we’re there.
