DAWN NEW BOOK – Gendered Impacts of China’s Development Initiatives in the Global South, edited by Cai Yiping

Published by Bloomsbury

DAWN is proud to launch its new book, Gendered Impacts of China’s Development Initiatives in the Global South, edited by journalist, feminist researcher and DAWN Executive Committee member Cai Yiping, now available in English.

This pioneering volume is the result of three years of collaborative research by feminist scholars from the global south, examining how China’s expanding global role is reshaping the lives, livelihoods, and rights of women across Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Drawing on grounded case studies – from Nigeria to the Solomon Islands, and from Peru to Zimbabwe, the book explores the deeply multi-dimensional and gendered implications of China’s engagement in the Global South. It analyses how a wide range of actors – states, corporations, civil society organisations and local communities – interact within these processes, and how power, development and gender justice are negotiated on the ground.

“This book sheds light on the variegated Southern feminist re-imagination of international cooperation, South-South relations, and the integration of women’s human rights into development practice. It is a must-read for all who better want to understand China’s rising presence in the global South, and the ways marginalised communities are demanding a seat at the table of negotiations with China.”
