UGANDA – Medics raise alarm over rising abortion-related deaths in Ankole

Journalists in the region have been urged to intensify public awareness campaigns against unsafe abortion in order to reduce the growing number of complications and fatalities

The article reports that 6% of maternal deaths in Uganda result from (unsafe) abortion complications. And that three out of every ten women admitted to the gynaecology ward at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital present with abortion-related complications.

Unfortunately, the only thing the Ugandan health services can offer is prevention of unintended and unwanted pregnancies because the head of state of Uganda is absolutely anti-abortion. As we know, this helps but it does not resolve the main problem: the need for safe abortion.
