GAZA – The unrelenting violence in Gaza has dire consequences for the maternal health of Palestinian Women

by Gemma Tarpey-Brown, Md Nuruzzaman Khan, and Karen Block

Since Jangda, Farhan, and Akilimali’s commentary published in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics last year, there remains a pressing need for an immediate end to the violence in Gaza. The conflict continues to have “direct – and sometimes deadly – consequences on reproductive health.” Women, children, and people aged over 65 years account for more than half the almost 84,000 people killed in Gaza between October 2023 and January 2025.

The conflict has profound health consequences associated with the deliberate destruction of health system infrastructure; severe restrictions on the delivery of essential medicines; enforced malnourishment and starvation; exacerbation of infectious disease outbreaks; and the significant rise in maternal and child mortality and morbidity.
