FOUR FACES OF CONTEMPORARY ANTI-ABORTION MOVEMENTS: CROATIA, LATIN AMERICA, MOLDOVA, USA

The combination of anti-abortion views, religious fanaticism, populism and right-wing politics is a dangerous cocktail. But that is what has been emerging in recent years as the underpinnings of contemporary anti-abortion movements in different parts of the world, with the added danger that they are connecting internationally. SEXUAL POLITICS IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC

A compilation of articles guest authored by Debjyoti Gosh, Lorena Moraes, Jacob Breslow, Bárbara Sepúlveda and Lieta Vivaldi Macho, that analyze the effects and emblematic episodes manifested in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. It also includes an article by David Paternotte, which was published in the LSE Gender Department’s blog Engenderings. It interrogates the conceptual framework of “backlash” as a productive lens for critically interpreting anti-gender politics.

MAMA NETWORK VIDEO

The Mama Network (@themamanetwork) is a collaboration of grassroots activists and feminist groups based in sub-Saharan Africa. They conducted a study with community leaders and health workers in five countries to assess the impact of self-managed abortion in communities. In this video, community members shared their preference for medical abortion over other abortion methods. WATCH THE VIDEO !!

INDIA – Aval – A Malayalam Short Film

Although India has fairly liberal laws when it comes to abortion, medical professionals are often hostile to women who approach them to get the procedure done. In cinema, too, abortion has been equated to murder far too many times. With the glorification of pregnancy and motherhood, this important reproductive right which gives women autonomy over their own bodies is demonised repeatedly.
