On 17 January 2017, the Constitutional Commission of the Chilean Senate approved the abortion bill by a vote of three to two. It has now been taken to the floor of the full Senate for debate.
On Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 January, the Senate could take the crucial step that will put to an end a law that makes all women and girls who need abortions for health reasons criminals – but the vote is in the balance.
Chilean women’s rights advocates have called on Chileans who support women’s health and rights and the international community to act!
Despite the fact that 71% of Chileans support the decriminalization of abortion in cases of risk of the woman’s life, in cases of rape and non-viability of the fetus, a minority of citizens are pressing key senators to block the reform.
We have less than 24 hours! We call on you to respond urgently to a mega-citizen petition to demonstrate to Senators the true will of the Chilean people to protect the rights of women and girls.

A pesar de que el 71% de los chilenos apoyan la despenalización del aborto en casos de riesgo de vida de la madre, violación sexual e inviabilidad del feto, una minoría de ciudadanos está presionando a senadores clave de la DC e independientes para que bloqueen la reforma.
