USA – A roadmap for research on self-managed abortion in the United States

Media coverage and research data show a growing awareness of the option to self-manage abortion outside of the formal health care system. Many people also recognise that facility-based provision of medical abortion in the USA is overly medicalised. This publication is a forward-looking research agenda focused on self-managed and de-medicalised abortion in the United States. It seeks to support people who self-manage abortion to do so safely and to generate critical evidence to remove unnecessary restrictions and provide medical abortion in user-friendly and accessible ways. The first goal is to understand better what those who need access to abortion care in the US are actually doing as they access medication abortion on their own, ensure that they are doing so safely, and explore ways to support them. The second goal is to work toward demedicalising care and expanding access to medical abortion within facility-based, legal medical services. The roadmap also details the plans of Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), Gynuity Health Projects, and Ibis Reproductive Health to undertake research and work together to fill the identified gaps.

LATER ABORTION INITIATIVE

The Later Abortion Initiative, a project of Ibis Reproductive Health, has created three fact sheets that can be helpful to advocates working to expand access to abortion. In collaboration with the National Abortion Federation, they are also available in Spanish. Additional resources can be found at laterabortion.org.
