‘We are all Rebeca!’
Rebeca Mendes is a thirty-year-old Brazilian woman, divorced, with two children and a precarious job. She is also a 4th year law student, with a scholarship awarded by the federal government. In such circumstances, she also finds herself pregnant by her ex-husband, due to the failure of an inadequate health system to provide contraception.
She has decided to terminate this pregnancy in order to complete her studies and focus on her existing family and work duties.
She has refused to take the risks related to an illegal abortion, and has appealed to the Brazilian Supreme Court in pursuit of a legal abortion. In Brazil, abortions are legally permitted only in cases of risk to the mother, rape, or anencephaly.
We support Rebeca Mendes in her right to have autonomy over her body and have access to a legal and safe abortion, just as we support the right of all women to have control over their lives and futures.
We also firmly oppose a newly proposed piece of legislation, Law 181, that seeks to also prohibit legal abortion in case of rape.
