Planned Parenthood Global and a diverse coalition of local and international organisations in Latin America have re-activated the #NiñasNoMadres (“Girls, Not Mothers”) campaign to shine a light on the increased risks of sexual violence girls are facing in the context of Covid-19 lockdown policies, which is further aggravated by additional barriers to accessing essential reproductive health services. The coalition launched a social media action with strong participation across the region, along with a petition calling on Latin American governments to protect the health and rights of all girls, including through access to information, comprehensive sex education and access to safe and legal abortion. The conversation generated on social media was followed by an online event with journalists from different countries, who shared their perspectives and raised the urgent and shared need to build a new normal where all girls can live their childhood and grow up healthy, strong and safe.
