MEXICO – Get to know the stories of other women

From Mexico, we share with you the launch of the digital fanzine “Enciendo mi voz” (I raise my voice) through the Instagram @FocosMx account. These are five stories of women who shared their experience of abortion in Mexico through the platform Focos.

Focos is an initiative of the National Alliance for the Right to Decide (Alianza Nacional por el Derecho a Decidir), which includes the following groups: Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir, Equidad de Género, Ciudadanía, Trabajo y Familia, GIRE, IPAS, and Population Council. Since 2017 Focos has been a digital space where women can turn on a virtual spotlight to show that they have lived this practice of abortion and have narrated in their own voices how that experience was.

Today we can say that, in the vast majority of cases, they have had resilient experiences.

Today, there are more than 3,800 lights on the virtual map, and more than 600 stories shared by women from across Mexico.

For the Plataforma Focos on Instagram @FocosMx, we have selected five stories that show the importance of family and social accompaniment to eliminate the stigma around this reproductive practice through the voices of the women who lived it.

Valeria Lizeth Ibarra is the young woman who designed the five issues of the fanzine, which will be available every three weeks, starting on August 24. We invite you to get to know and share this zine, so that the voices of women who lived an emotional journey can be heard, far from the myths and stigma related to abortion.
