CÔTE D’IVOIRE – AIBEF director pleads for legalisation of abortion without exception to prevent high mortality rate

On 19 June 2019, in Ouangolodougou, the Ivorian Association for Family Welfare (AIBEF) presented a plea for the legalisation of abortion in order to promote the free access of the people to quality of care in the respect of sexual rights without discrimination. AIBEF’s executive director, Dr Allo Richard, said that the high mortality rate among pregnant women is due to unsafe abortions. He called for legalising abortion to allow all women without exception to have a safe abortion if they wish. He described this as a critical aspect of the adoption of the law on reproductive health in Côte d’Ivoire, but above all, as the way to fight against the high mortality rate.
