ARGENTINA – Two stories: Campaign launched by doctors, and young voters in favour of legalising abortion

Doctors from across the country launch campaign for legalisation of abortion

Doctors have united in a campaign called “Salvemos miles de vidas” (Saving thousands of lives), thereby ending preventable deaths of women from clandestine abortions and rejecting “false news” about the practice. The campaign went public this week in Córdoba, Mendoza, Rosario (Santa Fe), Entre Ríos, Jujuy, Chaco, Corrientes, Río Negro, Neuquén, Santa Cruz, Chubut, Tierra del Fuego, La Pampa y las localidades bonaerenses de Bahía Blanca, Olavarría, La Plata y Junín. Most of these doctors treat women who present with consequences of clandestine abortions. “Some live and can describe their experiences, others die, so a law that guarantees the voluntary termination of pregnancy is urgent.”

Young voters care about abortion policy, but the politicians are ignoring them

The youth vote should be increasingly important in Argentina, but the leading presidential candidates in the next election are deliberately avoiding abortion, an issue that matters for most to them. When Milagros and Camila, both age 17, consider supporting a political candidate in Argentina’s next presidential election, the key issue is not how to tackle Argentina’s massive debt burden or how to curb skyrocketing inflation. What they care about most is whether the candidates are in favor of legalizing abortion. Since the disappointment last year for those in favor of legalisation, these two youth activists have campaigned for reproductive rights, better sex education, and access to contraceptives in their hometown of Salta, and organise events encouraging their peers to get to know their political representatives.
