ALGERIA – The government proposes to legalise abortion on three grounds

Article 82 of a government bill on health issues in Algeria proposes to make abortion legal on three grounds: 1) when the equilibrium of the woman, physiologically, psychologically and/or mentally is at great risk. The text is not explicit as to the nature of the loss of equilibrium, but it is thought that it refers to a woman who has been raped and falls pregnant. The second ground is fetal anomaly when the fetus is not viable. The third ground is if the life or the health of the woman is at risk if the pregnancy was to continue. In all three cases, the doctor treating the woman must inform her of the situation and with her consent, undertake all measures dictated by the circumstances.
