THAILAND: SOLIDARITY REQUESTS

Please sign two petitions!!

While Thailand has safe abortion services, Thai women have unsafe abortions every day because they are confused about the law and do not have good information about the existence of these services.

Tam Tang, a group formed by Thai activists who have experienced getting an abortion and have provided help and counselling for women to access safe abortion, have joined with the Choice Network Thailand, Women’s Wellbeing and Gender Justice Program, the Sexualities Studies Association and the Asia Pacific Alliance for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, to develop two petitions.

The first petition asks the Thai Department of Health to clarify, publicise and give accurate information and facts about safe and legal abortion, services providing abortions and the support allowance policy. This information is critical to protect women’s health and lives. This will also protect and support doctors and nurses who are providing services and helping those with unplanned pregnancies.

The second petition demands that the State Council and the Constitutional Court act to protect the health and rights of women in Thailand, and repeal Section 301 of the criminal code, which criminalizes abortion. Other regulations in Thailand contradict Section 301. Those regulations established a Referral System for Safe Abortion, and a network of doctors and nurses who provide safe and legal abortion for Thai women, in line with the regulations of the Medical Council of Thailand.  Additionally, the National Health Security Office of Thailand gives an allowance to registered hospitals to support and provide abortion services for the women.  The hospitals receive 3000 BTH (about USD 100) for each woman who needs abortion services.

Lastly, please help disseminate these petitions to your own networks!

Thank you very much!! Tam Tang (Thailand)
