Thousands march in Dublin 30 September (40,000 reported by RTE ; 30,000 reported by Irish Times). In her opening speech, Abortion Rights Campaign member Angela Coraccio said the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution, which gives equal rights to a fetus as to the woman carrying it, is “an instrument of torture” and described the country’s current abortion laws as “barbaric”. Irish Times 30 September 2017 + ARC Video

TAMOJUNTA, BRAZIL

First safe abortion hotline in Brazil launched on 28 Sept

The first safe abortion information hotline in the history of Brazil was launched on 28 September 2017. The hotline’s name is TamoJunta, which means “we are together” in Brazilian slang. The website is http://tamojunta.milharal.org and the phone number is +55 (11) 4349-6230. They can be reached on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9h-12h /15h30-18h30 and on Saturdays from 9h-13h. For the inaugural day on 28 September, they were working from 8h to 20h.

DEMONSTRATION, EUROPEAN UNION INSTITUTIONS

1,150 people demonstrated outside the European institutions in Brussels

They marched from the Parc du Cinquantenaire to the Schuman Roundabout where speeches were made. Marcela de la Pena Valdivia, the coordinator for the march, says that a setback is now felt. “Some European countries are still prohibiting abortion, such as Malta, Ireland and Poland, except for example when the woman is in any form of danger. In Ireland, the woman must prove that she is suicidal. Having to prove that a woman is in this form of distress is not acknowledging that a woman can consciously decide not to have a child, for any given reason or reasons.” She argued for harmonisation from above for abortion rights, orchestrated by European directives. “Female sexuality is not laid down as a tenet of fundamental human rights at European Union level, giving each country the right to decide on abortion.” The petition intended for MEPs on the issue already has some 22,000 signatures.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACCESS PROJECT, USA

This international day of action is built around four principles:  1) access to safe and legal abortion is a human right; 2) human rights need to be respected, protected, and fulfilled; 3) no one’s health or life should be at risk because abortion services are not available; and 4) abortion should not be restricted, prohibited, or criminalized. RHAP’s work is centered around fulfilling these 4 principles. To mark International Safe Abortion Day in the United States, RHAP will be asking you to join us in letting our state and federal officials know what still needs to be done in the United States to ensure that everyone, everywhere is able to access abortion safely and with respect.
