Facing Uganda’s Law on Abortion

The report is a compilation of experiences of women and health service providers in regard to abortion. The authors’ hope is “that these voices have the power to create space for the rights holders and duty bearers to speak out on these key issues and bring about change. We believe that sharing these stories will strengthen the case for legislative reform and lead to a decrease in the high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in the country as well as realization of the rights of women.”

“Abortion is a fact of life. It is estimated that over 300,000 illegal abortions are being performed in the country every year. With a maternal mortality ratio of 438 per 100,000 live births, more than a quarter (26 per cent) of these deaths is attributed to unsafe abortions; decriminalizing access to safe and legal abortion services in Uganda is key to reducing unnecessary deaths.”

African Commission calls on Uganda to ensure the right to legal abortion and reproductive health services. The regional bodies charged with ensuring African states comply with their human rights commitments calls for Uganda to implement the Maputo Protocol, which explicitly guarantees the right to legal abortion in particular circumstances.
